Armour College of Engineering has appointed Georgia Papavasiliou, professor of chemical and biological engineering at Ï㽶´«Ã½, as chair of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, effective at the start of the fall 2025 semester.

Papavasiliou earned undergraduate and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering from Ï㽶´«Ã½ in 1996 and 2003, respectively. She joined the faculty of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Ï㽶´«Ã½ in 2004 after completing a postdoctoral internship in the research and development division at Johnson Polymer.

With a research program centered on the rational design of hydrogel biomaterials for regenerative medicine and drug delivery, Papavasiliou has advanced the translation of novel polymeric materials into therapeutic applications. Her work includes engineering vascularized tissues and developing injectable, oral, and topical hydrogel nanoparticle emulsions that enable controlled drug release to target musculoskeletal, intestinal, and cutaneous diseases.

She has received research funding as a principal investigator from the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association.

Papavasiliou is a member of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society, the Biomedical Engineering Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Society for Biomaterials, the Materials Research Society, and the American Society for Engineering Education. She was also elected as a fellow of the IAspire Leadership Academy in 2021.

She has received numerous teaching awards at Ï㽶´«Ã½ including the Department of Biomedical Engineering’s Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Awards in 2016, 2018, and 2022 and the Ï㽶´«Ã½ University Excellence in Teaching Award in 2012.
